Snapchat Goes Pokemon Go With AR Cam Feature

,

Snapchat is bringing augmented reality to your phone’s front-facing camera via the new ‘World Lenses’ feature.
Users of Snapchat could already apply augmented-reality filters via the front-facing camera, using ‘Lenses’. You’ve probably seen this before when people apply a set of bunny ears to their head.

World Lenses flips this idea, encouraging users to augment the world around them, rather than images of themselves.
The new feature places a 3D object over the rear camera input, be that a Bitmoji or stylised text. Just like a real-world object, it can be manipulated in different dimensions and when users move around it, it stays in place.
Or, as Snapchat puts it, “paint the world around you with new 3D experiences!”
To achieve this, the app seems to perform some basic mapping of the 3D space presented by the camera, understanding where the ground is and how an object should look if it’s moved about.
