Gears Of War 4, PSVR Dominate UK Games Sales

The busiest week of the year so far for new games, has seen WWE 2K17, Rise Of The Tomb Raider, and a host of PSVR games storm the charts.

The games industry’s famous inability to schedule itself out of a paper bag has seen at tsunami of new releases crash against the shores of the UK top 40. And it’s taken FIFA 17 with it, at least in the individual formats chart.

With PlayStation 4 and Xbox One sales combined, FIFA 17 was still the biggest seller last week but the best-selling individual title was Xbox One exclusive Gears Of War 4. Although there’s no indication of how well it did compared to its predecessors.

According to Chart-Trak 80 new games, accessories, and peripherals (including the PlayStation VR) were released across all formats last week. Which is clearly madness, with only 13 new titles making it into the all formats top 40.

Skylanders Imaginators also had to make do with the lower reaches of the top 10, reaching number eight in the all formats and the PlayStation 4 version only getting as high as number 22 in the individual formats chart. Although given the game’s price and the fact that toys to life titles rarely chart highly, but sell consistently throughout the year, there’s not much you can draw from that.

The excellent Dragon Quest Builders was probably the least sensible game to have been released last week, and only managed to get number 15 in the individual formats chart and number 13 in the all formats.

Next week won’t be anywhere near the same sort of blood bath, although Battlefield 1 is well poised to knock FIFA 17 off from the top of the all formats chart as well. Beyond that though the only other major release is PC exclusive Civilization VI, which is likely to sell more as a digital download.
