What if you could create sketches mid-air and watch them appear onscreen? Patent applications that have recently surfaced hint that the tech could be in your future.
According to Patently Apple, Apple engineers have registered for a patent that allows the ‘Apple Pencil’ to work on non-touch surfaces—which means it might even function in mid-air. Your text and drawings can then be viewed on Apple devices like the iMac and MacBook.
A second filing suggests that a future ‘Apple Pencil’ might allow users to generate both 2D and 3D images before integrating them into augmented and virtual reality editing programs.
Apple explained that the stylus’ movements can be detected using a force sensor that’s built in it. “The position and/or motion of the input device can be tracked according to various methods including one or more of a motion and orientation sensor, a camera, or an electromagnetic- or sound-based triangulation scheme.”
Like many Apple patents, these proposals might not end up being implemented. It’s possible that these filings were made as legal leverage to prevent competitors from accusing the company of copying their ideas for future products.
