The city of Angoulême in France is already famous for hosting the world’s largest comic books festival. But since 2012, it is also home for a growing event exclusively showcasing 3D and Virtual Reality short films.
The Festival Courant 3D is a Festival dedicated to 3D and virtual reality short films. The Festival offer a digital mediation space, a “Uni-VR-City” accessible to all, allowing participants to explore experiences of virtual and augmented reality and to discover new immersive and interactive film technologies.
The Festival offers :
– Keynotes of artistes, directors, researchers…
– 3D short film competition de courts métrages en relief
– a Virtual Reality short film competition : 3D 360 VR
François Serre, president of the association Prenez du relief, says:
“The fifth edition of the Festival Courant 3D affirms its vocation and positioning to accompany techniques and writing in gestation. Moved by a profound conviction that there are new languages and new cinematographic perceptions possible. One notices that these new constructions or audiovisual expressions hybridize the notions of cinematographic genres, forms, techniques through relief, virtual reality and augmented reality. Something fusional, operatic, immersive and interactive reconditions the storytelling. The appearance of an “x” reality (xR) that also redefines the viewer’s position in “spec’ actor”.
It is these proposals for positioning induced by relief, virtual reality and augmented reality that have guided us in the choice of broadcasts and interventions that we offer you during this fifth edition.
The coming of Stuart Campbell is an important part of our programming. A program that wants to be opened this year to augmented reality. We also offer, with the Image Magelis Pole, numerous interventions by artists, directors, producers and broadcasters. You will of course find our short film competition 3D and 3D360VR. As well as our “Pitch”, open to stereoscopic productions for 3D shorts or 3D virtual reality 360 VR, with prizes ranging this year from 10,000 to 30,000 euros.
We have the concern to privilege projects that test this language and its possibilities; aspects often perceived as experimental. To initiate, through the festival, professionals, students and spectators in order to enable them to master this immersive power generating illusions, so as not to be subjected to them involuntarily.”
