The Australian film industry might be in financial freefall, but there’s nothing wrong with its cinema industry.
Just this year we’ve welcomed Thornbury Picture House, not to mention pop-up cinemas, drive-in cinema food truck dinosaur carnivals (not even kidding) and record choc-top sales at places like Nova, The Astor, Lido and Westgarth. Half of those choc-tops were boysenberry, and half of those boysenberry were me.
Well now you can add Virtual Reality to that list, because there’s a new VR cinema on Johnston St in Collingwood.

It’s called The Virtual Reality Cinema (makes sense) and it’s an independent space screening a select program of VR shorts and features.
How does a VR cinema work? It’s kind of technical. Picture a small room with 12 fancy swivel chairs, each with a VR headset ready to roll. The room is equipped with seven points of 3D/Positional Audio to trick your ears into thinking it’s all real.
A film screen simultaneously on all 12 headsets at once—you can swivel and look around, even see other participants. The plan is to screen 4-6 short VR movies in a single sitting. The whole thing should run for about 30-40 mins. It sounds flipping amazing (check out the current shorts for more info).

How much will it cost? Not too shabby really—$16.50pp for the complete program. You can check out upcoming session times here. The guys also have a small courtyard bar out back
Interestingly, the guys are also big on supporting upcoming VR filmmakers (we didn’t even know this was a genre). If you’ve got a production in mind, The Virtual Reality Cinema can hire out 360 Cameras and producer packs, and you can submit your finished work for screening.
